Acclaimed Chinese artist Fung Ming Chip at Art Asia Miami
News Releases
Miami, FL – November 11th, 2011 - Crimson Gate Fine Art is excited to present a solo exhibition of the work of celebrated Chinese artist Fung Ming Chip during Art Basel Week at Booth D29 in the Scope/Art Asia pavilion located at NE 1st Avenue and NE 30th Street in Midtown Miami. The exhibition will feature a broad selection of the artist's stunning contemporary ink-on-paper calligraphy and carved wooden seals.

Fung Ming Chip was born in a small village in Guandong province in 1951 and immigrated to the US in 1977. While living in New York City he developed an interest in Western abstract art, the influence of which was to be crucial to the artist's own exploration of, and modern take on, traditional Chinese artistic practice and theory. Despite being entirely self-taught, and receiving only a primary school education, Fung's influence on Chinese artistic tradition, and its reciprocal impact on his own life, has been dramatic. In the artist's own words "By reviving the traditions of seal carving and calligraphy, and successfully reframing them within a contemporary context, my own destiny has been transformed."

ART ASIA PRESENTS Highlighted Project: FANG LlJUN

Fang Lijun was one of the leaders of Cynical Realist movement of the early 1990's. His muted, solemn scenes and self-portraits have become some of the most iconic images of Contemporary Chinese art and are still found relevant today. Well versed in painting, sculpture, and installation, Fang Lijun is most noted for his powerful and innovative woodcuts. Co-opting this typical Social Realist technique, Lijun composes bold images consisting of several values or colors often printing the scene over a series of adjoining hanging scroll.

The special exhibit at Art Aaia will premier of selected, new woodcuts never before seen outside of the artist's studio. These wood cuts are of a technique called mu'ban'shui'yin. This technique has been described as a blending of traditional woodcut and lithography and is greatly respected as a perfect culmination of an artist's sculptural, painting and printing talents. Editions are being co-produced by Ethan Cohen Fine Arts and PACE Prints.

ART ASIA ... impressive array of sophisticated galleries, artists, and art making in general. In place of the usual overcrowded displays often seen at art fairs, these galleries seem to cohesively understand how to use space. Elegance and understatement was the model. As Acupuncturist, Artist, and Collector, Rula Giosmas says, "I thought the way the art was laid out was very nice and spacious. The gallery representatives were also very attentive and would answer any questions. I did not find that at other art fairs." - Examiner
